Harry Potter
I just finished Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I cried, twice. Beautifully done, wonderful story. I would have liked this one to be a little more fast-paced. Rowling has afforded herself the opportunity to write four more books, or at least one very action packed one for the series finale.
More than this, I won’t say until I’m sure that most of the people who read this site have read the book.
Dreamworks Stock Falls
And they are scratching their heads unable to understand why. They are attempting to blame this on soft DVD sales, but the truth is the quality of their work over the last several years has.. blown chunks!
I saw Shrek. That was a great flick, I enjoyed watching it on cable. It never drew me to a theater. Shrek 2 came around, it didn’t draw me to the theater either. When I caught it on cable, I was disappointed in what I saw. Shrek 2 really blew. Sharktale.. Nemo redone with worse animation and less consideration for the animals that were going to get shoved into aquariums by unthinking parents who just want to make their kids happy. Less than impressed. Madagascar? Um.. my kids are getting a little old for cartoon flicks, and the trailers for Madagascar were horrible. I had no intent of ever going to see that film from the moment I saw the first trailer. Now it’s possible that the trailers did the movie an injustice, and that the movie is a great film.
But now we get down to the real question, why didn’t I buy these films on DVD?
Quite frankly, because I had better things to buy. Harry Potter, Star Wars, Spiderman and The Incredibles. Why on earth would I buy Shrek 2, when I can spend my twenty bucks on those films? Can anyone come up with a solid argument for skipping Harry Potter or The Incredibles in favor of Shrek? I certainly couldn’t.
Worst of all for Dreamworks. My kids never asked to see any of these films in the theater. They never asked to see them on DVD. When they came on cable I turned them on for the kids. Guess what they did?
They shut Shrek2 off to play Ratchet and Clank Going Commando on the PS2.
And therein lies the rub. The PS2 is a much more adequate form of entertainment than most films being plyed into the general public. I’d rather play Sly Cooper or Final Fantasy, where I can get some real story and beautiful animation and be in on the action than watch Shrek dance around, fart and belch.
Dreamworks made the wrong call, and rather than blame it on poor judgment, they’re going to blame it on soft dvd sales. Has anyone stopped to realize that the video game industry makes more money in a year than the motion picture industry? They haven’t even bothered to stop and think that perhaps they are losing their audience to Ratchet and Clank.
We’re Not Afraid.
What a wonderful site. Link via Instapundit.
Just to add insult to injury, I’d like to add my list of to do for today just to show you how unconcerned I am about terrorism. Denotes what I’ve already done.
1. Mix saltwater for fish tanks.
2. Feed my pets.
3. Have a nice, leisurely lunch.
4. Clean caulerpa out of the fish tanks.
5. Talk hubby into 300 gallon fish tank to replace 75 gallon fish tank.
6. Fail in the above task, talk him into spending a few bucks on corals instead.
7. Clean my dog’s ears. (They look kinda icky).
8. And if I feel like it, maybe take a nap.
Yeah.. (note the sarcasm) I’m so scared…
Happy 4th of July
Happy Birthday America!
Seems silly doesn’t it, when you realize that this is what we are in fact celebrating. I have to wonder why America has never been made a red, white and blue birthday cake with giant sparklers on top to celebrate its years in existence, much as we human beings tend to celebrate our own.
Regardless, it is America’s birthday and it is a day for all of us to be proud of who we are and where we come from and where our nation is going in terms of its plays on the world stage.
Whether you choose to celebrate it or not, I’ve painted my nails red with silver and blue sparkles like I do every year and I’m gonna have a good time with my family as we peruse the various vendors in the public park, then go watch the fireworks show, and afterwards, I’ll stare at my nails for two hours while we get out of our parking spot.
Happy 4th America!
Shasta and Dylan Groene Found!
Of course, this wouldn’t make national news. They never report the good stuff that happens, remember?
In any case, the two children that raised the attention of the national news after their mother, her boyfriend and older brother were slain in their home, have been found. At the time, the girl, Shasta, was in the custody of a 42-year-old-man who was arrested on some unrelated charges, in addition to kidnapping. Dylan was found at a home not far from the Denny’s where Shasta was spotted.
I’m so glad these kids have been found safe.
Update: Dylan Groene is still missing, the earlier reports of his being found were made in error.
BTK Suspect Confesses to Murders
It still actually surprises me, how people react to serial killers when they make their confession. Killing people is what serial killers do, they tend to think of it like a job, or a private fantasy. They are the experts in their field, in their own minds at least. So why should it be surprising that they are cold or calm when discussing the murders?
Just because it’s shocking to you, doesn’t mean that it’s all that shocking to a person who’s more than a little messed up in the head. How can you expect someone who kills people for fun to feel remorse, or regret, or any emotion at all for what they did? If there is an emotion to be had on the subject by such people, certainly it would be one that would shock you far more than his calmness in describing the crimes.
Just as a point of interest, I’ve been studying serial killers on the side since I was a teenager. It started when I was assigned to write a short story about a historical event in my English class, and since I was into horror fiction at the time, I decided to write about Jack the Ripper. Since I wanted this story to be good, I researched Jack and that led me to research Charles Manson (I read Helter Skelter when I was a freshman in high school). My story turned out pretty good. I got an A on the assignment because it was thoroughly researched. So… don’t let it freak you out that I can see the world from that point of view. I’m actually a very nice person who has a hello kitty air freshener in her car, and wears lots of pink.
Which Evil Villain Are You?
Well… this explains a lot about how I was partially capable of channelling Moire…
